Japan plans to build fusion power plant equipment comprehensive test facility

Kyoto Fusion Engineering said it has completed the preliminary design of an integrated test facility for fusion power plant equipment and will start construction in August 2022, with plans to demonstrate the use of fusion-related technologies for power generation in 2024.

The proposed test complex, called UNITY, is the first of its kind to be built in the world. The facility's groundbreaking design allows testing of the heat extraction and fuel cycle systems needed for fusion power plants in one facility. With its ability to test under flexible conditions, UNITY will be the leading platform for private fusion companies to test power generation systems, enabling these companies to focus their resources on core fusion technology development.
