The last batch of spent fuel was reprocessed at the Sellafield Magnox reprocessing plant in the UK on 17 July 2022, marking the official end of the plant's operation. The Magnesium-Knox reprocessing plant has now processed all spent fuel stocks. Since 1964, a total of 5 million spent fuel rods and nearly 55,000 tons of spent fuel have been reprocessed at the plant.
The Magnesium-Knox reprocessing plant was designed to operate for 20 years, but ended up operating for 58 years, making it one of the most successful plants in British industrial history. For now, the Sellafield site will continue to store the UK's advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) spent fuel. The main process plant and its supporting plant will soon enter a new phase of cleanup and decommissioning.
