The gas crisis is causing Germany to rethink its nuclear policy

In response to the current gas crisis, Germany is discussing extending the life of its three operating nuclear plants. Some 68 per cent of Germans now support longer operating lives for nuclear plants. Experts from Germany's environment and economy ministries had recommended against extending the life of nuclear plants, citing legal grounds, the need for safety inspections and a lack of nuclear fuel. But the secretary general of Germany's Christian Democratic Union said the government could get nuclear fuel from Australia and Canada to keep the plant running.

TUEV, the company responsible for industrial testing and certification, says the three plants in operation are technically in good condition to extend their life. Germany pledged to stop using nuclear power after the Fukushima disaster in 2011, and its only three operating plants are scheduled to close by the end of 2022. In the first quarter of 2022, Germany's nuclear power generation accounted for 6% of its total power generation.
